Brand guidelines that people open twice

We have been rebuilding brand books as pages instead of PDFs, and it changed how clients use them.

Every identity project used to end the same way. We would deliver a PDF, everyone would say thank you, and the file would go into a folder. Six months later someone in marketing would be building a deck with the wrong grey.

The format was doing the damage. A document that has to be found, downloaded, opened and searched will always lose to whatever is already open in the person’s browser.

Rules where the work happens

So we build them as pages now. A live URL, the type specimens rendered in the real fonts, the palette with values you can copy, the components sitting there as components rather than as screenshots of components. When the identity moves, the page moves, and everyone is looking at the current version without having to think about it.

The effect on how a brand actually gets used is larger than it sounds. People check things they can check in five seconds. They guess at things that take five minutes.

It keeps us honest too

Building the system as a working page means every rule has to survive contact with a real browser. Spacing that only exists inside a Figma frame gets caught. A type scale that falls apart at 375 pixels wide gets caught. The guideline and the thing it describes stay one object instead of two that slowly disagree.

We have been collecting the identities we have built and evolved into one place at mimosaagency.com/branding. It has quietly become the most useful page we have for explaining what we do.
